Our aspiration

Sustainability and growth

Doing business responsibly and sustainably is important to us. That is why we have implemented strategies that help us to have a positive impact on the environment, our employees, and our customers, as well as on society.

How can an insurance company operate sustainably?

In response to this question, we have developed a FRIDAY ESG strategy. ESG stands for Environment, Social and Governance. First, we start with ourselves. As an organization, we are carbon neutral and treat our employees and partners responsibly. Together, we strive for healthy growth and stability. In addition, we want our insurance products to provide an incentive for customers to integrate a bit more sustainability into their everyday lives.

We ourselves: Sustainable as a company

FRIDAY is climate neutral. We regularly calculate our environmental footprint and have offset all CO₂ emissions from our activities since the company was founded in 2017.

For you: Sustainable insurance

Leaving your car behind is the best way to protect the environment, but in everyday life that doesn't always work. That's why FRIDAY enables car insurance with CO₂ compensation, for example.

UN goals as a framework

All our activities and initiatives are guided by the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

For a healthy environment

Combating climate change is of central importance not only for reasons of social responsibility, but also for our business model. After all, adverse weather events such as flooding are costly for us as an insurer. That's why at FRIDAY, we are reducing emissions as a business and not only encouraging our employees to reduce their environmental footprint, but also hoping to inspire our customers and partners to act and behave in an environmentally friendly way.

FRIDAY is climate neutral

FRIDAY has offset 100% of its emissions since the company was founded. This means that since 2017, a total of 3537 tCO₂e generated by our operations and service providers have been offset. Our main goal is to continuously avoid as many emissions as we can. Unfortunately, however, it is not possible to avoid 100% of emissions. At these points, we compensate.

In 2020, for example, we produced unavoidable emissions of 1273 tCO₂e. This is 32% more than in the previous year. Due to our continuous growth, an increase in our emissions cannot be avoided. That's why we look at emissions per employee. In 2020, these fell by almost 44% to 10.77 tCO₂e per full-time employee.

Until the end of 2022 our partner for this important task was Planetly. The climate-tech company calculated the unavoidable CO₂ emissions and handled the offsetting together with us. Together, we have already supported high-quality climate protection projects in Kenya, Rwanda, India, Peru and China. The projects not only contribute to a healthy environment, but also help reduce poverty through sustainable economic development, promote gender equity, and improve hygiene and health at the project site. All carbon offset projects supported by FRIDAY are Gold Standard certified and thus meet the strictest quality requirements.

What's next? Following the shutdown of Planetly, we are already working on implementing a new process of offsetting with a new partner. Because we want to continue offsetting our CO2 emissions in the future and, in parallel - and much more importantly - continuously reduce them further.

Focusing on the UN Sustainable Development Goals

In 2015, the United Nations adopted the "2030 Agenda." It is a shared approach to peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and in the future. At its heart are 17 sustainable development goals, the Social Development Goals (SDGs). These form an urgent call to action by all countries (developed and developing) in a global partnership.

The SDGs recognize that eradicating poverty must go hand-in-hand with strategies to improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth - all while combating climate change and protecting our oceans and forests.

As FRIDAY, we align all of our actions and activities with one or more of the United Nations SDGs. We want to make a contribution to tackle this big task.

Products for fewer emissions

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is one of the most urgent climate protection challenges worldwide. In Germany, an average of 7.9 metric tons of CO₂ are produced per capita and year. Around a quarter of CO₂ emissions from private households are caused by mobility. Leaving your car at home is therefore the best way to protect the environment.

With our fair number-per-kilometer car insurance, we have created an approach that encourages people to leave their cars at home more often. After all, if you drive less, you automatically pay less for your insurance. That's good for your wallet and the environment.

In the reality of life, however, there are also many situations in which it is not yet possible to do without a car. For this reason, FRIDAY offers drivers the chance to offset some of their emissions without having to buy a new, more expensive car or cycle to the office from now on.

One car insured, one tree planted.

Healthy forests are important for a healthy planet. They reduce the harmful effects of climate change. They also provide a habitat for countless animal species and thus contribute to the preservation of biodiversity. Reforestation is an effective and scientifically recognized measure to counteract the climate crisis. Every tree counts.

FRIDAY supports the reforestation of forests and the preservation of biodiversity. For every FRIDAY car insurance policy taken out through Check24, FRIDAY plants a tree together with the non-profit organization One Tree Planted. One Tree Planted's projects span the globe and are carried out in cooperation with local communities and knowledgeable experts. This continuously monitors the quality of the projects and ensures a sustainable and long-term impact for nature, people and wildlife.
